If you grew up Filipino, you probably heard some version of it.
Don't sleep with wet hair. Don't bathe when you're tired. Ayaw sige'g hilabot sa imong nawong. Don't keep touching your face. There was always something you should eat, something you shouldn't do, or a remedy somebody's lola swore by.
Long before many of us understood the science, we were already learning about beauty, food, health and our bodies from the people around us.
Some of that wisdom was worth keeping. Some of it changed as we learned more. And some of it simply deserved another question.
Ngano?

That question is at the heart of Estelle.

For Lo Wier, those conversations began in the Philippines.
Growing up around Filipino beliefs about beauty, food, the body and health meant growing up with a mixture of tradition, observation and tuohan — beliefs passed from one generation to another.
Years later, Lo's life would take her from the Philippines and Hawai‘i through a career in technology and national security, into healthcare and entrepreneurship, and eventually through beauty and wellness experiences across places including Paris and Barcelona.
The worlds were very different.
The question remained surprisingly similar:
Why do we believe what we believe about our bodies?
Estelle grew from the idea that tradition and science do not always have to be opponents.
Sometimes something passed down through generations contains wisdom long before we understand the reason behind it.
Sometimes evidence asks us to reconsider what we have always been told.
What matters is being willing to understand the difference.
