What Microneedling Actually Looks Like: Yani’s Treatment at Estelle
One real treatment, from the first pass to the days afterward—with Dr. Roxborough explaining the science along the way.
There is a difference between understanding how a treatment works and actually seeing one happen.
We’ve already explored the biology behind microneedling—why creating tiny, controlled injuries can trigger the skin’s natural repair response and why collagen has become such an important part of the conversation.
This time, we wanted to show you the other side of it.
What does a real microneedling appointment actually look like?
Yani joined us at Estelle Aesthetics in Cebu and generously agreed to let us film her treatment from beginning to end.
I performed her microneedling session while Dr. John Roxborough IV walked us through the science, the treatment itself, what happens afterward and perhaps the question people become most interested in once they look in the mirror:
Is my skin supposed to look like this?
Usually, some redness is very much part of the experience.
But there are a few things worth knowing before you get there.
01 — Before We Begin
Microneedling isn’t simply a matter of picking up a device and moving it across someone’s face.
The skin in front of you matters.
Before treatment, we consider the condition of the skin, areas of concern, relevant history and whether there is anything that makes treatment—or treatment right now—inappropriate.
The goal isn’t to make the skin as red as possible.
It is to create a controlled treatment response while avoiding unnecessary trauma.
That distinction matters.
02 — The Treatment
Microneedling uses very small needles to create controlled microscopic injuries in the skin.
Those micro-injuries initiate the body’s wound-healing response, a process associated with tissue remodeling and collagen production.
For Yani’s treatment, I worked systematically across different areas of her face using the Dr. Pen A20 microneedling system.
Different parts of the face aren’t necessarily treated identically. Technique and treatment parameters can vary according to the area being treated and the individual in front of us.
More isn’t automatically better.
And deeper isn’t automatically better either.
Sometimes restraint is the more sophisticated treatment decision.
03 — What We Used
During Yani’s session, we used BCN Revita-HA, a professional poly-revitalizing cosmetic solution from Barcelona.
It contains hyaluronic acid alongside a combination of additional cosmetic ingredients and forms part of the professional protocol used during the session.
But there is something important to understand here.
The serum isn’t the treatment.
Neither is the device by itself.
The device, technique, treatment parameters, skin preparation, products selected and aftercare all contribute to the overall treatment experience.
A beautiful vial cannot compensate for poor technique.
Less glamorous, perhaps. Much more important.
04 — Immediately After Microneedling
This is the part that perfectly filtered treatment videos sometimes leave out.
Your skin may be red.
Yani’s was.
Temporary redness following microneedling can resemble a mild sunburn. Some people may also experience warmth, sensitivity or mild swelling during the initial recovery period.
And that’s why seeing a real treatment is useful.
The photograph immediately after a procedure isn’t necessarily the finished result. It is simply one moment in the skin’s recovery process.
Over the following several days, some people may also experience dryness, peeling or flaking as the skin settles.
Which brings us to an important point.
Do not decide that peeling skin needs your assistance.
Your scrub can wait.
05 — The First 24–48 Hours
After microneedling, skincare becomes considerably less exciting.
That’s intentional.
Freshly treated skin generally benefits from a gentler routine while the skin barrier recovers.
Depending on the individualized instructions provided after treatment, this may include temporarily avoiding makeup and minimizing things that can increase heat, sweat or irritation.
That means your post-treatment plans probably shouldn’t involve a sauna, hot tub or heroic gym session.
Follow the moisturizer and sun-protection instructions given by your treatment provider, and resist the temptation to introduce something new because the internet said it would make you glow faster.
This is not the week for experimentation.
06 — Give the Actives a Holiday
For the first several days following treatment, patients may be advised to temporarily stop potentially irritating skincare ingredients.
That can include products containing retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, stronger Vitamin C formulations, exfoliating acids, facial scrubs and other aggressive exfoliants.
Exactly when these products should be restarted depends on the treatment and the individual.
Your twelve-step skincare routine will survive the separation.
The objective during this period is fairly unglamorous:
Let the skin recover.
07 — And Yes, Sun Protection Matters
Post-procedure sun protection deserves considerably more attention than it usually receives.
Follow your individual instructions regarding when to resume sunscreen after microneedling. Once appropriate, broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and sensible sun avoidance can help protect recovering skin.
This is particularly relevant when your treatment happens in Cebu.
The Cebu sun is beautiful.
Freshly microneedled skin does not need to experience all of it firsthand.
08 — What’s Normal—and What Deserves a Call?
Some temporary redness, sensitivity, warmth, mild swelling, dryness or flaking can occur following microneedling.
What matters is how the skin progresses.
Symptoms that are significant, persistent or worsening rather than improving deserve attention.
Increasing pain, significant warmth or swelling, fever, blistering, a spreading rash, drainage or anything else that feels concerning should prompt you to contact your treatment provider or an appropriate healthcare professional.
And if something genuinely doesn’t look right after a procedure, this is one occasion when TikTok should probably not be your diagnostician.
Call someone qualified.
The Treatment Is Only Half the Story
We spend an enormous amount of time talking about what happens during aesthetic treatments.
Which device?
Which serum?
How deep?
How many sessions?
Those questions matter.
But so does what happens after you leave the treatment room.
Microneedling may take place during an appointment. The biological response it initiates continues afterward.
That is why we believe understanding recovery is just as important as understanding the treatment itself.
Thoughtful treatment.
Thoughtful aftercare.
And enough science to understand why we’re doing any of it in the first place.
Beauty, considered. Science, understood.
